Breaking barriers - Emma Kearney on and off the field

As an AFLW premiership captain and the only player to be named an All-Australian every season since the competition’s inception, Emma Kearney has continually pushed boundaries. But her contributions extend far beyond the football field.

As an ambassador for Ladder, a charity that supports young people to level the playing field, Kearney channels her drive into making a meaningful impact in the lives of others.

A personal drive to make a difference

“I’ve always had so much joy helping others – that’s where my passion started with my charity work,” Kearney shares. “I had a really privileged upbringing, and as I got older, I realised that others haven’t been as fortunate. Being able to give back to the community gives me more happiness than it probably does with those I’ve worked with.”

This deep sense of purpose has fuelled Kearney’s efforts to support young people through Ladder, the number one charity of the AFL Players Association. Her commitment to level the playing field ensures young people have the tools and opportunities to thrive.

“I’ve worked closely with Ladder – an organisation that supports young people to level the playing field. They provide essential support and resources to help young people build confidence, gain independence and achieve their goals,” she explains.

Through her advocacy, Kearney has helped amplify the organisation’s mission, using her platform to shine a spotlight on the challenges faced by disadvantaged youth and the solutions Ladder provides.

Overcoming doubt and building resilience

Kearney’s strategies for overcoming doubt and discouragement are rooted in self-reflection and seeking support. Her proactive approach underscores the importance of mental health and personal growth, both on and off the field.

“I always seek feedback to get better,” she says. “It’s totally normal to have doubt in your life, but it’s important to seek support from those you trust and from those who want the best for you. I also seek psych support to overcome self-doubt and to change my inner dialogue so I’m speaking about myself in a more positive light.”

Kearney’s journey has been shaped by a powerful life lesson: “The number one lesson is to say yes to opportunities – even if you don’t think you’re ready for the challenge,” she declares. “The door may shut if you don’t say yes.”

This mindset has propelled her to achieve remarkable milestones, embracing new challenges with determination and grit.

Inspiring the next generation

As Kearney’s career has evolved, so has her definition of success. “When I was younger, success to me was always having a good job, a house and money. As I’ve grown, success is more than that. It’s enjoying the journey and seeing the growth you’ve achieved along the way. True success is when you’re happy and content with where you are in life,” she reflects.

This holistic view of success aligns with her work in the community, where impact and connection are central to her goals.

Kearney’s journey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of seizing opportunities, supporting others and redefining success. Through her work with Ladder and her storied AFLW career, she exemplifies resilience, leadership and the power of giving back. As she continues to break barriers and inspire change, Kearney reminds us that success is not just about personal achievements – it is about lifting others and creating a brighter future for all.
